Ryan Nealon poured in 30 points in the first half to lead the way for the NEPA Elite Coyle 17U boys team Saturday during an 81-62 victory over Penn Warriors at The Hoop Group Pittsburgh Jam Fest.

Nealon’s outburst, which included seven 3-pointers, helped create a 49-35 halftime lead.

Mikey Cumbo took it from there, scoring 14 of his 15 points in the second half when Nealon added 2 more to finish the game with 32.

Nealon, a sophomore at Abington Heights, helped the Coyle team recover from losing its first game of the day and improved it to 2-1 in the bracket play portion of the event. The team also lost a Hoop Group Showcase League game Friday night before the start of its bracket competition.

Will Marion, Nealon’s teammate at Abington Heights, added three 3-pointers while scoring 10 points.

With Cumbo, Danny Nemitz and Eli Yusavage adding one 3-pointer each, the Coyle team hit a total of 13 in the game.

The day began with the Coyle team still in the 17 HGSL-3 Championship Bracket where it fell in the second round when the New England Storm broke open a four-point game at the half to win, 55-36.

Ben Chilson and Cumbo had seven points each in the loss while Gabe Tanner and Nemitz had six each.

Tanner and Nemitz are both from Mid Valley, Cumbo from Dallas, Yusavage from Valley View and Chilson from Tunkhannock.

The NEPA Elite Cooper 17U team began its tournament Saturday morning and had a halftime lead before falling short, 48-44, against MCIB 2023.

Julian Pagan, who had 9 points in the first half, and James Pettinato, who had 10 in the second half, each finished with 13 points.

Pettinato hit three 3-pointers.

Kellen Casey chipped in seven points.

The Cooper team came back to win its second game, 63-58, over Connecticut Elite PS in the consolation bracket for Sweet 16 Losers from the Allegheny Bracket.

Pagan is from Pocono Mountain West. Pettinato and Casey are both from Scranton Prep.

The NEPA Elite Joyce 16U and Miller 15U teams each lost both of their Saturday games after winning first-round bracket games Friday.

The Joyce team lost to Team Loaded 757, 58-36, in the 16 HGSL-1 Championship Bracket, then fell to Gibbs Elite, 55-28, in the consolation bracket for second-round losers.

The Miller team was beaten by New Jersey Shoreshots HGSL, 57-44, in the 15 HGSL-1 Championship Bracket and New Heights HGSL, 61-25, in the consolation bracket for second-round losers.

Matt Godlewski from Riverside had 11 points and Marc Jackett from Wyoming Seminary had 10 during the loss to Shoreshots.

The second-game Saturday wins mean the Coyle 17U and Cooper 17U teams still have Sunday morning games remaining.
